Rhythms of Peace (RPeace.org) was founded in Boston Massachusetts (USA) in 2004
as a means of organizing talented musicians, dancers and other performers
interested in supporting critical humanitarian efforts around the world.
Programming has focused on presenting both original and world music,
combined with dancing, poetry and other performance art.
Rhythms of Peace performances raise funds for the benefit of areas with
critical relief needs, with particular emphasis this year on the crisis
in the Darfur region of the Sudan. Its financial support for Sudan is
linked to one of the largest current inter-faith, inter-agency relief
program on the planet. Performances also serve to raise awareness of
critical humanitarian issues around the world, while promoting many
important – and generous - world-music artists.
Representative performers include the Agbekor Society (African drumming),
Ayakano Cathleen Read (Japanese Koto), John Baboian (Arabic and Latin guitar),
Moussa Traore and Timinandi (Mali djembe master, drummers and dancers), the
Queen Yuan Dance Group (classical and stylized Chinese dance), Rob Eagan
(Scottish Bagpipes), as well as singer-songwriter Susan Cohen and sound-healer Mark Rosen.
The founder of Rhythms of Peace, Dennis Sullivan, has been active since 1980
in producing public and private concerts and musical theatre, as well as booking
dance and concert orchestras in the Greater Boston area. He has also presented
educational workshops and children's' concerts in virtually every community in
the Boston area. He has partnered with groups such as Young Audiences on
program development, been artist-in-residence in several communities and at
Oxford University (UK), directed the music for community theatre, and worked
with Boston high school students focusing on musical careers (Madison Park High School, Boston Arts Academy).
As a performer Dennis has toured, recorded and appeared on television with groups
such as the Boston Symphony, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Boston Pops. He
is currently in his 25th season as timpanist for the Boston Classical Orchestra,
founded by the late Harry Ellis Dickson, for which he also is a member of the board of directors.
