9/11 Memorial Family-Friendly Jazz and Gospel Concert to Benefit Youth Programs

Saturday, September 10, at Payson Park Church in Belmont, MA

Rhythms of Peace, in association with Payson Park Church, Belmont, presents “A Family Sing-Along, Jazz and Gospel Showcase” concert to benefit the City Mission Society of Boston. The program takes place Saturday September 9th from 7:00 to 8:30 PM in the Payson Park Church Hall, at 365 Belmont St, Belmont MA, 02478. Again urging audiences to think globally and listen locally on this fifth anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, Rhythms of Peace invites the community to join in singing well-known, traditional songs, and enjoy a program of Jazz and Gospel music presented by prominent Boston-based performers.

The evening opens with a set by Willie Sordillo, saxophone, whose trio performs at the Thursday night weekly Jazz Service at Copley Square’s Old South Church. Willie brings his unique style, blending the spiritual with the cool in his accompaniment to services at one of Boston’s most venerable of venues. His accompanist is Carolyn Wilkins, a faculty member at Berklee College of Music in Boston, who leads the Sunday Jazz at 5:30 program at First Church Congregational in Cambridge.

This will be followed by accordionist Warren Johnson, well known from Boston to Brisbane for his wide-ranging, popular repertoire and for his dedicated service to humanity. Mr. Johnson will lead a sing-along of tunes that many adults learned from their parents, providing an opportunity to pass the simple joys of music-making to another generation, while giving voice to fellowship through uplifting song.

Following intermission, the Rhythms of Peace Gospel Ensemble will present a set of traditional gospel selections. Members of the ensemble perform regularly as part of the rich cultural fabric of Boston’s urban community.

Paul White, the evening’s featured performer, concludes the evening showcasing his versatility in Classical, R&B, Gospel, Blues, Jazz and Hip-Hop styles. His list of outstanding accomplishments includes appearances nationally and internationally both as a soloist and with orchestras. Mr. White has toured with headliners including Billy Preston, Bill Gaither and Nina Simone, among many others.

Donations may be made in advance or at the door (suggested as $20 family, $10 adult, $5 under 13). Light snacks and refreshments will be available. Child care will be available in the nursery for babies and toddlers on a first come first served basis.
